Welcome to Wednesday

Are you feeling it??  Days are getting longer; weather is getting warmer.  Before long we will be complaining about the heat and humidity! I thoroughly anticipate a change of seasons is just around the corner. So, before it gets too hot, let’s take a minute and consider . . .

THOROUGH

Thoughts:

Merriam Webster defines through as: “1) to complete with regard to every detail; 2) performed or written with great care and completeness; 3) taking pains to do something carefully and completely.” If you are thorough, you are extremely attentive to accuracy and detail. You are careful and complete and you provide comprehensive detail to all that you do.

People tend to rush through things. We want a working result or benefit without investing the time and energy required to understand how something works, how it provides benefit, or the process or steps necessary to achieve the result or benefit. While it is not necessary to know how everything works, you should be confidently knowledgeable of the work you are performing.

It’s attention to detail that makes the difference between average and stunning. Thoroughness is a crucial component of any type of success. Research shows that people who are meticulous, detail-oriented, and well organized are more likely to be not only better employees, but more effective leaders.

Liam Carnaham offers some suggestions on things you can do to become more thorough:

Train yourself to slow down and breathe.

  • Be realistic about deadlines.
  • Create a focused space by minimizing distractions.
  • Learn how to ask questions.
  • Always have a notebook and pen handy.
  • Get into the habit of checking your work.
  • Practice putting yourself in other people’s shoes.
  • Take care of yourself to improve your focus.

Just a word of caution – being too thorough can lead to bigger issues. It is a fine line between paying attention to details and being obsessive or a perfectionist. Being detail oriented is one thing, but getting caught up in the details in ways that impact your productivity can lead to setbacks. It is better to cultivate an appreciation for details, while still being able to step back and look at the big picture or ENJOY TODAY’S SUNSHINE.
