Welcome to Wednesday
Hope you all had an enjoyable Independence Day and celebrated your freedom. I took some time to watch the History Channel and became addicted to and intrigued by past events in US history and the accomplishments, ingenuity, and achievements of our society, in general. So I find it appropriate to share some thoughts about History.
HISTORY
Thoughts
History is defined as, “the study of past events or a series of past events connected with someone or something.” History is a chronological record of significant events often including an explanation of their causes. History is the study of the past – the people, societies, events and problems – as well as our attempts to understand them.
The past and history are not the same. The past refers to an earlier time and the events that took place there. History describes our attempts to research, study and explain the past. What happened in the past is fixed in time and cannot be changed. In contrast, history changes regularly. The past cannot be changed. History is an ongoing consideration of the past and its meaning. History is the story of who we are, where we come from, and can potentially reveal where we are headed.
Studying history helps us understand how events in the past made things the way they are today. With lessons from the past, we not only learn about ourselves and how we came to be, but also develop the ability to avoid mistakes and create better paths for our societies.
“History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view, to be useful to the modern traveler.” Henry Glassie, US historian. “History is instructive. What it suggests to people is that even if they do little things, if they walk on the picket line, if they join a vigil, if they write a letter to their local newspaper… Anything they do, however small, becomes part of a much larger sort of flow of energy. And when enough people do enough things, however small they are, then change takes place.” Howard Zinn, American historian (1922-2010)
